California Wildflower Art for Mother’s Day

April 25, 2017

Mother’s day is just around the corner. And if I know moms, there are a couple of gifts that are always winners – flowers and pictures of their grandkids. This year I’m giving both. California is finally out of it’s long draught and we have the most amazing wildflowers this year. I don’t want these pretty images just living on my camera or laptop. I want to be able to enjoy these colorful hillsides all year round. So, I’m gifting some of the wildflower pictures I took a couple weeks ago to my mom and mother-in-law this year.

I’ve teamed up with Mixbook again to bring you another FREE Download and a really awesome discount for Oleander + Palm readers. You guys – keep reading because you all get 60% off coupon code!  Last month I tried out their sleek, modern Acrylic Prints. For Mother’s Day I felt like something a little more classic, like a Framed Canvas Print, would be better for moms. And these canvases are soooo pretty. I’m going to have a hard time giving them away.
I love modern framed canvas prints like these for styling and decorating a bookshelf. With their clean, straight-edged frames, they can easily sit on a shelf. Mixbook offers three frame options for their canvas prints – white, black and espresso. You can also order a canvas print without a frame, but I think the frame instantly elevates the look.
You can download this FREE California Wildflower image HERE! Feel free to print it on a canvas or upload one of your own awesome snaps. While we are here chatting about art on a bookshelf, I thought I’d share a few tips for styling a good looking #shelfie. I started with a very inexpensive, industrial/storage style shelf. And with the right items, place in the right stops, it looks nice enough for a living room.

1. Start with big and bulky items on the bottom of the shelf. If you are going to store items in baskets or bins, visually these items feel more balanced if they are placed on the bottom shelves. Also, you really don’t want to be lifting heavier items off and on a top shelf, I would just feel awkward. So, I started with a cute metal basket, filled with pillows and a throw for easy access.

2. Next, place art pieces on the shelves. I chose to place the field of flowers canvas on the highest shelf, it is definitely above my eye level, but this image is less of a detail shot and can be enjoyed from a distance. The cute picture of Olivia sitting in the flowers is one I want to see a little more up close, so I place it on the middle shelf. This shelf is closer to eye level. Art can be hung on the wall behind the shelf, leaned against the back, or sat upright like these cool framed canvases.

3. Think horizontal next. Obviously I don’t have a lot of books on this bookshelf, but they still are an important part of styling this shelf. Instead of placing books upright with their spines facing out. Try creating little stacks of books for horizontal interest. Think of these stacks as little risers for pretty objects.

4. Play with height and depth. On any self, you don’t want all the objects to be the same height. Place shorter objects on the stacks of books to give them a little lift. Try to place objects, that are on the same shelf, all at different heights. Also push taller, bulkier items further to the back of the shelf and layer in shorter, more petite items near the front. It’s ok to overlap items. You don’t want everything all lined up in a row.

5. Finally, add a little metallic. We’ve played with shapes and colors, now it’s time to think about texture. And a shiny metallic finish can really be the jewelry for a good looking shelfie. I chose to sprinkle in a few shiny brass pieces. I added a little metal calendar to the top shelf, a brass box to the middle, and a vintage candle holder near the bottom. And what’s a Mother’s Day gift without a thoughtful card (another thing moms are guaranteed to love)? Did you know that Mixbook also has an awesome selection of Mother’s Day Cards, cards for all occasions and even invitations? I made custom cards for the moms in my life with a few of the pretty wildflower images. You can even add custom text and pictures to the inside of the cards as well. I added one more shot of Olivia to the inside.Add don’t forget, Mixbook has an AMAZING discount for Oleander + Palm readers. You guys get 60% Canvas Prints!!!!!! Kentucky Derby Party

April 19, 2017

Kentucky Derby PartyKentucky Derby PartyThrowing a party doesn’t have to be a tone of work or super stressful. I think if you have a great drink, a sweet and a savory snack and a fun take-away – everyone is guaranteed to have have a good time. If you want to appear a little more on the fancy side, may a suggest throwing a little Kentucky Derby Viewing Party. Really I love any excuse to host a get-together, but one with a little Southern charm feels classy.Kentucky Derby Party This year, Ghirardelli is an official sponsor of the Kentucky Derby and they have just come out with the NEW Dark Chocolate Bourbon Caramel SQUARE. It is soooo good. Bitter sweet dark chocolate filled with creamy, rich bourbon flavored caramel – it’s a match made in heaven. Any good Southern-inspired party definitely needs these delicious chocolates served. Oh man you guys, I’ve had to limit myself to one a day, because they are the perfect little sweet treat.
Kentucky Derby PartyKentucky Derby PartyFor my little get-together, I’m serving Ghirardelli‘s NEW Dark Chocolate Bourbon Caramel SQUARES, Chipotle Lime Pecans, and Virgin Mint Juleps. As a little party favor, all the guests are going home with a mini trophy filled with a tine mint plant, so they can go home and make more mint juleps. To bring a little winning good luck, I used pretty ceramic trophies to hold flowers and treats. Party decor doesn’t have to be complicated and time consuming. Some fresh flowers can really make a party festive in no time at all.Kentucky Derby PartyKentucky Derby PartyWhen I think Southern treats, pecans always come to mind. These sweet, salty and a little spicy Chipotle Lime Pecans and the perfect pairing for Ghirardelli’s NEW Dark Chocolate Bourbon Caramel SQUARES.Kentucky Derby Party

Chipotle Lime Pecans

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • zest and juice of one lime
  • 1 tsp. chipotle
  • 1 tsp. kosher salt
  • 2 cups whole pecans
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil

Toss all the ingredients in a bowl together to coat all the pecans evenly. Spread out on a parchment lined baking tray. Place in a 350F over for about 20 mins. Toss half way through the baking time. If the nuts are starting to get dark brown, remove from the oven. Allow to cool completely and then break apart any nuts that a stuck together. Store in an airtight container.

When I think about a warm Southern day, a refreshing Mint Julep comes to mind of course. And since I’m a fan of the mocktail, I’v come up with a fun virgin version of this Southern classic.Virgin Mint JulepVirgin Mint Julep

Virgin Mint Julep

  • 1/2 cup fresh mint chopped
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ginger ale
  • lime juice
  • crushed or small pebble ice
  • powdered sugar, lime wedges and sprigs of mint for garnish

Start by making the mint simple syrup. In a small pot, place the water, sugar and mint. Bring to a boil and boil for one minute. Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely. I like to leave the mint leaves in the syrup as long as possible. When you are ready to serve the drinks, stain off the mint leaves with a fine metal sieve. Store the syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Fill a glass with crushed ice. Add two  2 oz. mint syrup, the juice of half a lime and ginger ale to fill the glass. Stir and top the glass with more ice. Sprinkle the top of the drink with powdered sugar and garnish with a wedge of lime and a sprig of fresh mint.

This drink can also be made in a pitcher if you are serving a large crowd and you don’t want to fuss with mixing individual drinks. 1 liter of ginger ale, mixed with the full batch of mint simple syrup and the juice of 3 limes make enough to serve 6-8 guests.Virgin Mint JulepKentucky Derby PartyKentucky Derby Party

Strawberry Basil Mock-Margarita

April 18, 2017

Strawberry Basil Mock-Margarita

I must be ready for Summer, because I want strawberry flavored EVERYTHING! We planted a few strawberry plants about a month ago and we are already enjoying a few berries every couple of days. Picked from the garden, they are perfection, so sweet and juicy.

A strawberry mocktail is definitely Summer in a glass. And you know how much a love a fruit and herb combo. Basil gives this drink a fun earthy twist. This drink is on the sweeter side, so salt rim is kind of nice.

Strawberry Basil Mock-Margarita

Strawberry Basil Mock-Margarita

  • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves
  • 1 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1 cup sugar
  • lemon/lime soda
  • lime juice

Rim a glass with salt and then fill with ice, squeeze the juice of half a lime, add one part Strawberry Basil Syrup to two parts lemon/lime soda (sprite or sierra mist). Stir and garnish.

Hunter Douglas PowerView Shades

April 14, 2017

I’m so excited to finally share our living room with you. I’ve made two really big changes that make this room feel a lot more finished. I’ve painted the room white (no more dark teal walls) and we’ve gotten rid of all the drapes.
Last week I shared how I’m really not a curtain girl. And today I’m sharing our amazing new Hunter Douglas Silhouette Shades. I couldn’t be happier. These gorgeous shades instantly modernized our 1918 house. Our living room has so many large, unusual sized windows. Having custom made shades that mount inside the windows, allows the beautiful, original wood trim to really shine. Having curtains that hide all this trim just seems wrong.
Living Room Shades
So, not only are these made to fit our windows exactly, these amazing Silhouette shades have no cords, no pulls, and no strings. They are controlled completely wirelessly with the Hunter Douglas’s PowerView Motorization. You can control and even schedule the shades to open, shut, and change the light filter from you smart phone, tablet, or remote.
I’ve put together a little video to show you these window treatment masterpieces in action. Photographs don’t do them justice, you need to see these shades moving.

If you’ve ever lived in a house with old windows, you know that they are not the best insulators. When it’s hot in Bakersfield, it’s very HOT! Silhouette’s signature S-Vane is designed to put you in control of the amount of natural light that comes in, with beautiful effects. With no cords or tapes, the sheer facings allow you to view through the vanes to the outside, while maintaining a discreet level of privacy. We live on a somewhat busy main street, so being able to allow light in during the day but still have privacy is a really awesome feature. These shades even protect furniture, floors and artwork from fading with UV  protection.

Living Room Shades Living Room Shades Living Room Shades

The PowerView Motorization that is available with Silhouette is a revolutionary new system that automatically raises, lowers, tilts or traverses a single or group of window treatments throughout the day, so you don’t have to. We set up our shades in groups by room. Then, with the PowerView App on our iphones, we created and scheduled Scenes throughout the day. In the very early morning, we set the shades to filter in the light yet still offer privacy. Mid-morning the day is in full swing and we wanted to flood the room with light, so we scheduled them to open all the way. Mid-afternoon, the sun can be a little harsh, so we scheduled the shades to tilt and to filter in a softer light. In the evening, we have the shades scheduled to close a few minutes after sunset.  And on the weekends, you can encourage a slower start, by keeping the space shaded a little longer. It’s complete luxury and we love it!

Hunter Douglas shades even work with smart home devices like our Nest. For example, Nest can sense when you’re away from home and alert the PowerView App to activate a PowerView Scene of your choosing. These can range from Scenes that optimize privacy to those that emphasize home security or energy conservation.

Living Room ShadesLiving Room ShadeWhile we really haven’t bought any new furniture at all, this room feels like a brand new space. When we bought this house, one of my favorite things about this space was these gorgeous windows. I’m glad they can finally be shown off.Living Room ShadesLike I said, we haven’t bought any new pieces, but here’s a look at how the room is coming together. I still want to hang one more frame to the left of the TV, under the wall sconce. But, I think we are off to a good start and it feels like home when you hang familiar pieces on the wall. Living Room ShadesLiving Room ShadesLiving Room ShadesLiving Room Shades

California Wild Flowers 2017

April 13, 2017

California Flower Fields 2017

Yep, it’s that time of year, California wild flowers are everywhere! And this year is called a Super Bloom. Every Spring, I look forward to a little wild flower hunting with my family. As you all know by now, I’m married to a legit nerd. Lonnie, my biology teacher husband, is all about plants, animals and all things environment. Actually one of our first dates in college was to go wild flower collecting so that he could press the flowers. He identifies all the flowers with his field guides and I take the pictures.

After a long draught, it’s so much fun to see so many poppies and lupin in the hills. We drove just 20 mins East of Bakersfield last weekend to find these beautiful blooms. So, if you hurry, I think there is still time to find wild flowers in California. (If you know the area, just head for the hills near Arvin, CA)

Olivia still loves all these little adventures we go on. While it is illegal to pick the California poppies, she did enjoy picking a lot of the other blooms. She literally ran through the flowers, hunting for lizards and smelling everything in sight. I’m so glad I took an afternoon to capture these images. I guess life in California is pretty darn idyllic.

This week we are in Northern California, Eureka, at my parent’s place. We are enjoying the Redwoods, the beach and lots of much needed rain. I’m sure I’ll be sharing a lot more of all the gorgeous landscapes California has to offer up here as well. I’m pretty proud to be a Californian.

Boysenberry Basil Limeade and the Boysenberry Festival

April 11, 2017

Boysenberry Basil LimeadeBoysenberry Basil Limeade

Today I’m sharing a fun mocktail with you inspired by Knott’s Berry Farm‘s Boysenberry Festival. This year, this Boysenberry Basil Limeade will definitely be served at out Easter brunch.

Last weekend, we headed a couple hours South to visit Knott’s Berry Farm for all the fun festivities. I think it’s going to be an annual tradition for the McConnels. We went last year and were instantly hooked. The kids loved the rides of course and all the Boysenberry treats were out of this world. The Boysenberry Festival is open from April 1-23. Yes, there is lots of delicious food, but there is also a lot of special shows and entertainment happening as well.

I picked up a few Boysenberry treats from their shop so I could bring home some of that yumminess – Boysenberry Syrup, Honey and Tea.

Knott's Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival

This is the perfect time of year to visit Knott’s. The weather is perfection in California right now and the park is full of gorgeous flowers. All throughout the park, there are lots of Boysenberry treats to be found. The boysenberry donut is still my favorite treat in the park. But with the Boysenberry Festival Tasting Card, we got to try a little of everything. How can you pick a favorite with a delicious menu like this:

  • Boysenberry Pizza
  • Boysenberry Ravioli
  • Boysenberry Buffalo Wings
  • Boysenberry BBQ Meatballs
  • Boysenberry Fry Bread
  • Boysenberry Panna Cotta

Knott's Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival Knott's Berry Farm Boysenberry FestivalKnott's Berry Farm Boysenberry FestivalKnott's Berry Farm

This might be one of best mocktails I’ve made in a while. I’m a huge fan of an egg white in a drink. Not only does it make the prettiest drink, it’s also tastes delicious.

Boysenberry Basil Limeade

  • 1 oz. boysenberry syrup
  • 1 oz. basil simple syrup
  • 1/2 cup limeade
  • 1 egg white
  • ice
  • lime slices and fresh basil leaves for garnish

Start by making the basil simple syrup. You will want to make this drink one glass at a time. You will want to serve it right away, while the drink is super frothy. Pour 1 oz. boysenberry syrup, 1 oz. basil syrup, 1/2 cup limeade and the egg white in a shaker or large mason jar. Shake vigorously to combine all the ingredients. Once it begins to get a little frothy, add a couple ice cubes and shake some more. Pour the drink into a glass, straining out the ice. Garnish and serve right away.

Basil Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 fresh basil leaves finely chopped

In a small pot, bring the water, sugar and basil to a boil. Boil for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely. Strain the syrup through a fine metal sieve. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Non-Curtain Window Treatments

April 6, 2017

A long time ago, I decided that I just wasn’t a fan of curtains. The idea of adding some color or pattern to a room seems nice, but in reality, it doesn’t every work in my spaces. Yes, I like when someone else uses curtains, but for some reason curtains and I are not friends. In our first house, I had white linen curtains in our dining room for about a year or two. And they were okay, but not great. And then in this new house, I bought curtains and hung them in our bedroom, only to take them down the very next day. And aren’t curtains just big dust collectors? One of my favorite things about owning an old home is the windows. 100 year old Craftsman windows are huge with beautiful wide trim around them. I felt like curtains just covered up all the pretty wood work.

Our living room is a gigantic room with 9 windows!!! It really has 3 walls of windows. When we bought the house, there was striped, satin-like curtains hung on ornate curtain rods. I knew they had to go, but trying to figure out what to replace them with was not an easy task. I tried some pretty linen colored drapes for a day or two thinking that the gold and blue stripe was what was bothering me. But no, even the simplest curtain panel just didn’t feel right. I just didn’t want to hide all that pretty unpainted wood trim.

So, I started hunting for non-curtain options and I thought I’d share some of my favorites with you. In our last house, we had cellular blinds in almost every room. In our master bath and kitchen, I made fabric roman shades (which I super time consuming to make). So, I started looking into shade options. One of the the windows in the living room is 8 feet wide though, so anything we were going to install had to be custom.

I began looking at Hunter Douglas cellular shades and discovered SO MANY amazing options. I’m talking about stylish, high tech options that are so much better then any mini-blind or curtain out there.

Having to turn to a custom option, because of the size and age of our windows, Hunter Douglas gave me a lot to consider. You aren’t stuck just figuring it all out on your own, they have dealers all over the country. And actually the paint store I often visit even has a Hunter Douglas display room and a dealer. Here’s some of my favorite shade options and why I’d consider them.

  1. Fabric Vane Shades – These sheer shades allow light to filter in and still offer privacy. I like this option because we live on a main street, and while I love natural light flooding in, I also don’t want the whole neighborhood to know what I’m up to. These also have a modern, minimal feel. And I love that you can see through these shades even when they are down.
  2. Fabric Roman Shades – Roman shades are a classic look. And they come in more options then you can imagine. But, I wonder if 8 feet of fabric across a window will feel heavy and cumbersome in our house. I also don’t know that we need complete black-out or privacy for this room.
  3. Roller Shades – Roller Shades are clean and slick looking. They roll away to almost nothing, leaving no bulk of fabric or shade at the top of the window. They come in every color and pattern. They are very practical, but I feel like there are really only two options with these shades – open or closed.
  4. Adjustable Fabric Vane Shades – Everything I love about #1, but even more adjustable. These shades tilt to allow light to come in a different angles. I love the idea of privacy and filtered light all at the same time. And these shades also have no cords or pulls, they are completely automatic and can even be operated from your phone!
  5. Cellular Shades – I’ve long been a fan of these honeycomb shades. We lived with them for 13 years in our first house. They are neat and tidy and the almost disappear when they are pulled all the way up. We also found that these shades helped insulate our house from the heat and cold. If you live with 100 year old windows, you know that this is very important. These also come in every color possible, but I’m sure a classic neutral would be my first pick.
  6. Woven Texture Roman Shades – These shades have all the classic features of a traditional fabric roman shade, but also the pretty texture of natural fibers. They have the look of grasscloth, but all the shade and ease of a Roman Shade. I feel like these natural textures and tones would work really well with all the wood trim in our house.

So, many amazing choices, I can’t wait to share with you what we pick. Stay tuned. What would window treatment would you consider for our windows? Are you are curtain or non-curtain person?

Now, let’s take a look at the before.  Don’t you think we can do better?

And how about those curtain rods? And yes, the blue/green walls are gone.

Blood Orange Jalapeno Mock-Margarita

April 4, 2017

Blood Orange Jalapeno Mock-MargaritaI’m a huge fan of sweet and spicy combinations. This Blood Orange Jalapeno Mock-Margarita has hint of heat, just enough to make it interesting. We love Mocktails, because the whole family can enjoy them. But, if you are looking for a more serious drink, be sure to check out this recipe, for a fun twist on a traditional margarita.

This might just be one of the prettiest drinks out there. And you’d be surprised, even kids like the touch of jalapeno. The only change I might make for youngsters is to rim the glass with sugar instead of salt. Personally I love the salt, it’s such a satisfying combination with a fairly sweet drink like this one. Blood Orange Jalapeno Mock-MargaritaBlood Orange Jalapeno Mock-Margarita

  • 5 cups blood orange juice
  • juice of 2 limes
  • Jalapeno Simple syrup (see recipe below)
  • ice
  • course salt
  • blood orange slices and thin slices of jalapeno for garnish

In a large pitcher with lots of ice, mix the blood orange juice, lime juice and simple syrup. Rim the glasses with raw sugar and lime zest. Garnish with limes and jalapeno slices.

Jalapeno Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 jalapenos sliced

Bring the ingredients to a boil and boil one minute. Remove from the heat and then chill for 1-2 hours. Pour through a metal sieve to remove the jalapeno slices and seeds. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Cheers to a great week ahead! I’m celebrating having my taxes done with one of these refreshing drinks tonight.

39 Must-Have Decorative Trays

A couple weeks ago I shared some fun bathroom art and some tips for keeping your bathroom stylish and organized. I shared an image of a bunch of my favorite trays. Lemon Chicken Garbanzo Bean Salad

March 29, 2017

The air is warm and I’m ready for some quick easy salads for lunches and even dinner. This Lemon Chicken Garbanzo Bean Salad will definitely going to be on repeat here in the McConnel house. It’s packed with lots of good stuff and definitely is not lacking in flavor. I love salads like this that make me feel like I’m eating a treat instead of depriving myself.Lemon Chicken Garbanzo Bean SaladAs you know, I was in Sweden last week. One thing I noticed about Swedes, is that they don’t have very much fast food. Everywhere you are, you are guaranteed to find a hearty salad and veggie loaded sandwiches. This salad was definitely inspired by the healthier choices that were readily available in Sweden.Lemon Chicken Garbanzo Bean SaladA touch sweet, tangy and loaded with crunch, every bite of this salad will make your mouth happy.

Lemon Chicken Garbanzo Bean Salad

  • 2 cans of chickpeas (drained and rinsed)
  • 1/2 cup grape tomatoes cut in half
  • 1/2 a red onion finely chopped
  • 1 cup cucumber chopped
  • 1 orange bell pepper chopped
  • 1/2 cup kalamata olives pitted and halved
  • 1 tbsp. fresh parsley chopped
  • 1 cup cooked farro
  • 1/4 cup feta cheese crumbles
  • 2 large chicken breasts
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 tbsp. fresh rosemary

Salt and pepper both sides of the chicken breast. Heat the olive oil in a frying pan. Add the chicken and sprinkle it with the fresh rosemary. Cook 5-7 mins. on each side, or until the chicken breast is cooked through completely. While the chicken is cooking, make the dressing. Remove the chicken from the pan and allow the chicken to rest for at least 10 mins.

In a large bowl combine all the veggies, garbanzo beans and farro. I like to by pre-cooked farro for convenience, but farro can be easily cooked on the stove top. Bring to a boil 3/4 cup farro with 2 cups of water. Reduce to low and simmer for 25-30.

Cut the chicken into bite sized pieces and toss with the veggie mixture.

Lemon Garlic Dressing

  • juice and zest of one lemon
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tbsp. white balsamic vinegar
  • salt and pepper

Place all the ingredients for the dressing in a blender or food processor. Blend on high to mix the ingredients together well. Pour over the salad and toss.

Sprinkle the salad with a little extra feta and serve chilled.

Lemon Chicken Garbanzo Bean Salad

This salad gets better with time. So, you’ll definitely enjoy this salad the second day as well.
