Blush + Camel

September 8, 2016

Color is sure fun! Why haven’t I noticed this perfect combo before? Sometimes I just get on a kick when I notice a combination that just works really well together. And then I start pinning and searching down inspiration and before you know it I want re-do a whole room (or at least change all the pillows on my sofa).

Maybe it is the change in season, but I’ve been loving this warm camel color. It’s somewhere between brown and yellow and it feels warm and cozy. It also has this fun vintage vibe to it, probably a 70’s look and feel that I love. And blush – well I still love all these soft, subtle shades of pink.

Blush + Camel - a color combo to crush on.

camel tealight holder // woven cross pillow // camel paisley sheets

triangle pillow // camel serving bowl // blush arrowhead pillow

peach quilted pillow // blush linen pillow // round camel pillow

blush planter // pink leather pillow // blush folds pillow

Ok, now let’s observe blush + camel living together in the wild. I’ve got a few examples that are going to make you want to scheme up a plan to make this color combo a part of your life right away! This is such a pretty pairing.

Add Style to Kitchen Linens with Cricut Gold

Add style to kitchen linens with the Cricut Gold for JoAnn

If you’ve been following me for a while now, you know that I LOVE making cool, customized pieces for my home with my Cricut Explore Machine. It’s really my favorite crafting tool ever!

And do you remember when I got to design a whole bunch of fun projects for the Cricut Gold Machine for JoAnn? Well, if you don’t remember, I’m about to remind you – be sure to check out the Half Moon Wall HangingGeometric Patterned Edge Throw, these fabulous pillows, and also these fun Tropical Leaf NapkinsAdd style to kitchen linens with the Cricut Gold for JoAnnWhen we moved this last month and I unpacked our kitchen boxes, I realized that my kitchen linens had seen better days. My oven mitts, pot holders and dish towels were stained and just down right ugly. So, I decided to add a little style to our kitchen linens by customizing them with some of the modern geometric patterns I’d designed for the Cricut Gold Machine.

Using the metallic gold, glitter gold and white iron-on vinyl, I cut out a couple different sizes of this pattern. (And if you don’t own a Cricut, you can still use this awesome iron-on material and just cut out simple shapes with a pair of scissors.) And then I just ironed the patterns onto generic, inexpensive grey towels and oven mitts.

Now I’m drying dishes and grabbing pots in style!

The Week’s End

September 2, 2016

Well, September is here, so I guess we really do have to say good bye to Summer. Homework, practicing instruments, school pick-ups and drop-offs, lunches, marching band, cross country, and drum line – days like this look nothing like the freedom of Summer.

I’m looking forward to the weekend. I need to do some grocery shopping and meal planning. Week night dinners have been on the fly, and I’d rather have a plan. It’s still hot here, but since it’s “Fall”, I’m pulling out the crock pot and making some giant pots of soup. Do you have any favorite Fall recipes I should be making? Dinner ideas and inspiration are welcome.

Plans for the Upstairs Bathroom

August 30, 2016

Well, I can’t believe we’ve been in our house a month now. It feels so much like home already. So far, we have tackled the sunroom and unpacked almost everything.  And so, I guess it’s time to move onto another room. Next up is the upstairs bathroom, the one the kids use. It has adorable black and white tile floors and the original subway tile on the walls (see the before pics below). It has a lot of storage and it’s a nice spacious room. But, there is no shower, it’s just a bathtub. With two teenagers, that is just not going to do.

So, I did a lot of measuring and searching online and found a shower curtain surround that mounts to the ceiling and wall. And if you follow my snapchat (I’m oleanderandpalm), you would have seen yesterday that I figured out how to retro fit the shower head hose to the new shower head that came with the curtain surround. Feeling pretty proud of myself! It’s not ideal, but for less then $100, we now have a working shower upstairs.

Now that the shower is working, it’s time to make the space cute. Fresh paint is a must! The cabinets and trim are pretty beat up. And as much as I really do like Toile, the wallpaper is going. I really want to keep this room bright and white with some crisp black. I’ve been pinning and these are some of the ideas I’m considering. I love the idea of painting the door black, at least on the inside. I also think if could be nice to paint either the walls above the subway tile black or add new black in white wallpaper in a more modern pattern. And if I don’t paint the walls black, maybe it would be nice to paint the cabinets black.

Night Cereal – Curry Coconut Cashew Granola

August 29, 2016

Curry coconut cashew granola. A sweet and spicy 'Night Cereal'.

I had so much fun creating a fun sweet and spicy ‘Night Cereal’ a couple weeks ago. The Chocolate Chipotle Granola is gone and I might have single handedly eaten it all by myself. So when got milk?, CA Milk challenged me to create another savory twist on cereal and milk for a fun night snack or even meal, I was ready for another challenge.

This was a easy flavor choice our family. One of our favorite things to eat is curry, especially coconut curry. This latest savory cereal recipe is another sweet and spicy combination. The heat of a little curry is balanced with sweet mangos and pineapple. Olivia, my youngest, is always ready to help in the kitchen. And I find that if kids help with cooking and prepping meals they are more likely to eat whats put before them. She loves measuring the stirring so I happily took the help.

We’ve survived the first couple of weeks of school, but we have a crazy week ahead of us. With sports, band, church activities, and homework I know there is going to be an evening when this savory cereal is going to hit the spot as a late night snack or even dinner that my kids can grab for themselves. Curry coconut cashew granola. A sweet and spicy 'Night Cereal'.curry coconut cashew granola curry coconut cashew granola curry coconut cashew granolaCurry Coconut Cashew Granola

  • 1 cup of dried coconut
  • 1 cup cashews
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 2 1/2 tbsp. curry powder
  • 1/4 tsp. cumin
  • 1/4 tsp. cardamom
  • 1/4 cup dried pineapple (chopped)
  • 1/4 cup cup dried mango (chopped)

In a small pot, combine the coconut oil, honey, sugar, curry powder, cumin, salt and cardamom. Warm over medium high heat until the sugar and honey dissolve. Remove from the heat.

In a large bowl combine the oats, coconut, cashews. Pour the melted honey and coconut oil mixture over the oat mixture. Stir till all the ingredients are wet.

Pour the granola onto a parchment or silpat lined baking sheet.Spread out on the sheet evenly. Bake in a 325 F oven for about 25 mins, stirring the mixture halfway through the baking time. Then add the pineapple and mango pieces and bake 5 mins. more.

Cool completely and then break apart the bigger clusters of granola. Store in an airtight container. Serve with cold milk or use as a yogurt or ice cream topping.curry coconut cashew granolacurry coconut cashew granolacurry coconut cashew granolaThis post is brought to you by got milk? (Food loves milk!) Pumpkin Spice Waffles with Homemade Cinnamon Ice Cream

August 24, 2016

In honor of National Waffle Day and in hopes of bringing on Fall, here is the recipe for our favorite waffles – Pumpkin Spice Waffles. This is a recipe for the O + P archives. I first shared this recipe in 2010 and when I did my blog re-design earlier this year, it was lost in the shuffle. I couple of friends have asked for this recipe, so I thought I’d re-share it. It’s still a really great recipe.

pumpkin spice waffles

When comfort food is needed, waffles are our the best.  I adapted an Ebelskeiver recipe to make this waffle recipe. I really liked a Williams -Sonoma recipe because of the graham crackers in them. Now, are you ready for all things Pumpkin Spice? Even though it’s still 100 F here, I’m ready, so so ready!

pumpkin spice waffles

Pumpkin Spice Waffles

1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs
1 cup flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt

2 eggs separated
3 tbsp. butter (melted)
1 cup milk
1 cup canned pumpkin

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.  Beat the egg white with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form, set aside.  Combine egg yolks, milk, and butter.  Pour the egg and milk mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined (it will still be lumpy).  Alternate adding 1/2 the eggs white and 1/2 the pumpkin until combined.  Cook waffles in waffle iron according to your iron (probably spray your iron with a non-stick cooking spray).  Top with Cinnamon Ice Cream and Candied Pecans.

pumpkin spice waffles

Cinnamon Ice Cream

1 egg
1/3 cup sugar
3/4 cup milk
3/4 cup cream
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. cinnamon

Mix well and put in ice cream freezer.  Prepare ice cream according to your freezer.

Pumpkin Spice Waffles

Candied Pecans

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup whole pecans

Put the sugar into a small non-stick fry pan.  Heat sugar until in turns to a liquid.  Before it begins to turn a golden color, add in the nuts and stir.  Make sure the nuts are completely coated and the sugar begins to turn slightly golden.  Pour nuts onto parchment paper and allow them to cool.

Goodbye Summer

August 23, 2016

_janie and jack olivia 8

I’m going to warn you right away – today’s post has way too many pics of Olivia, my youngest in the most adorable clothes from Janie and Jack! I just couldn’t help myself. I use my camera everyday, but lately I feel like it’s just for food, DIY and interior photography. And while that is my job, I don’t want to miss capturing some of the milestones in my kid’s lives as well. And really, taking pictures is one of most favorite creative things to do.

I really don’t think parents ever look back and say, well darn we took way too many pictures. I know all too well that they grow up way too fast. I can’t believe Denali, my oldest, is in the 10th grade. So, I wanted to capture the end of our Summer and Olivia at the fun age. She started TK this week (it’s Transitional Kindergarten, a California thing). That means she goes to school everyday!

_janie and jack olivia 19

To celebrate the end of Summer and her new school adventure, Olivia and I got dressed up and we went downtown for a little date. We went out for her favorite treat – Macarons from De Coeur Bake Shop. Olivia asks for these special sweets many times a week. Usually it sounds something like this, “Mom, sometime we should go have Macarons.” She’s just throwing that out as an idea or a suggestion. So this week I indulged her request and surprised her with her favorite cookies. _janie and jack olivia 9

I’ve always been a fan of Olivia wearing black and white. Maybe it’s because she is such a toe head. For her first year, I took monthly pics of her in a black and white polka dot shirt. Janie and Jack sent us the most adorable mix and match black and white combinations. Janie and Jack clothes instantly turn life’s smallest moments into ones to treasure. I’m so glad I have all these fun pictures of Olivia at this stage in her life.

Olivia is a spunky, energetic, outgoing kid. She keeps us busy and bring so much joy to our family.

Now, I challenge you to go document your life! Take sometime today to take pictures of your kids, your pets, your friends. You’ll be glad you did.

How-to Remove Wallpaper Without Harsh Chemicals

August 22, 2016

Well, I’m just about ready to tackle some more wallpaper in our house. It’s a messy job, but I think we have a pretty good system down. We opted to not use harsh chemicals or expensive steamers.  The sunroom wallpaper came off a lot easier then we thought it would. And those white walls make me VERY happy. How to remove wallpaper without harsh chemicals. Please don’t be tempted to paint over wallpaper. This is not a shortcut you want to take. You’re walls will look so much better if you strip all the wallpaper off and start with clean bare walls.

We did a little pinterest research and I followed Cyd of The Sweetest Occasion‘s dawn soap suggestion she shared on Snapchat.

So, here’s what worked for us.How to remove wallpaper without harsh chemicals. You’ll need:

Step 1:

Tape all the way around the room with the painter’s tape drop cloth. This is a messy, wet job. You will want to protect your floors.

Step 2:

Using the wallpaper scorer, run the scorer over all the walls. You do not want to apply a lot of pressure or you will damage the walls. Just move in a circular motion to create tiny holes all over the walls.how to remove wallpaperStep 3:

Mix one part dawn dish soap with 5 parts warm water in a spray bottle. Work on one wall at a time. Spray down the entire wall with the warm, soapy mixture. Be generous! And then allow the solution to sit on the walls for about 5 minutes.

*Warning* – Even though this is just soap and water, the smell is pretty strong and it kind of hurts your eyes. how to remove wallpaperStep 4:

Using a wallpaper scraper, begin to scrape away the soggy wallpaper. If some wallpaper is stubborn, spray down generously with more warm soapy water.how to remove wallpaperStep 5:

As you begin to scrape, you will be able to peel off some bigger pieces of wallpaper.

Step 6:

Once all the wallpaper is removed, wipe down the walls well with a rag and warm water. Remember you have soaked the walls in soapy water, all the residue needs to be removed in order to prep for painting. You will need to wipe and rinse down the walls at least 3 or 4 times.Craftsman Sunroom MakeoverAnd now you can paint!!!! I know wallpaper is making a strong comeback, but this room feels so much bigger and brighter without busy, floral wallpaper. I do plan to add some wallpaper to a room or two in this house, but whether I paint or re-wallpaper, starting with clean, bare walls is definitely the first step.

Do you have some wallpaper removal tips or tricks? I’d love to hear what has worked for you.
