Happy New Year 2019!

December 31, 2018

Last year I was stuck and just couldn’t come up with a word for the year. And until this morning, I didn’t have a word for this year either. Not that you HAVE TO have a word. I’ve just enjoyed having one that last few years. It’s given me a little focus or goal and that feels good sometimes.

This year I am bracing myself for a rough January. I’ve got a few big things ahead of me that I am not looking forward to. It’s definitely not all doom and gloom, but I do know that these “things” are going to require a lot of my time and energy. I want to feel excited about the year ahead of me, and not have this feeling of dread that I do right now.

Last year I drained myself and invested so much time and energy into client projects and local work. Some of that was great, other parts were definitely learning experiences that I am happy to have behind me. I found myself at a burn out stage more than once last year. And I had no way to quit or take a breather. This year I want to set myself up for some SUSTAINABLE success. So, that’s my word – SUSTAINABLE! It’s a simple, not very glamorous word, but I think it’s exactly what I need.

Sustainable is defined as able to be maintained at a certain rate or level. I really want less up and down in my life. I want to have a little routine and be able to start, see through, and then also finish STRONG. I’m a dreamer and love the idea and concept building stage of projects best. But, I want to sustain that energy and passion I have at the beginning all the way through. Some of that might be dreaming less “BIG”. This probably sounds the opposite of any motivational writing that you’ve seen recently. But, I know myself and I need some limits. I think there is something very practical about sustainability. That might sound boring, but as a natural risk taker and adventure seeker, I think my business and life in general could use some practicality.

January 1st I’m starting my Month of Minimizing with 30 days of cleaning out clutter in our home. I felt like this was a “sustainable” series to start the year with. I hate when I have a great idea and then I don’t follow through and finish it. This new series gives me a little accountability in seeing something through and really practicing my word for the year right off the bat. (Oh, and I’ll have lots more details about this fun new series tomorrow.

Sustainable is a great word in that it can be applied in a lot different ways. Sustainable living is something Lonnie and I have always strived to achieve. Sustainable living a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual’s or society’s use of the Earth’s natural resources, and one’s personal resources. Its practitioners often attempt to reduce their carbon footprint by altering their methods of transportation, energy consumption, and/or diet.  We aren’t perfect, but it is always a consideration in the decisions we make (remember I’m married to the biology nerd). Having this word for the year, might help us even more on our quest.

Well, I don’t know if any of this makes sense at all. In my head it does, so I guess that is all that matters. And sometimes I just like to throw ideas out there, because it might be something that resinates with one of you. Maybe SUSTAINABLE is something you are seeking as well. And if it is, feel free to save, pin or even print off one of these “sustainable” images.

So, do you have a word for 2019? I’d love to hear yours and why you chose it. Leave me a comment below.

And now, have a happy and safe New Year’s Eve! We are staying home with out kiddos, grilling a nice steak dinner and Olivia and I are going to make donuts later. Yep, that’s how we party. Thanks for following along all year, this next one is going to be a GREAT one! I know it.

Vintage Christmas Finds

December 25, 2018

Well, Merry Christmas Friends! I hope you are enjoying a wonderful day with your family and friends. We definitely are. But, I promised that I would share a little bit of my Christmas decor this year and some of my vintage Christmas finds as well. So, here you have it!

I fondly refer to all my Christmas stuff as “Christmas Crap” but really they are some of my favorite treasures. I’ve spend years and years (20 to be exact) decking my halls out. Somewhere along the way I found my “Christmas Style” and now most of the things I own kind of go together. A big part of what I own is either something I made or something I found thrifting. Vintage “Christmas Crap” gets me every time. If it’s something that resembles something my Grandma had, then I’ve gotta have it. If you are just starting out, or maybe want to find a common thread to your decor, I think a great way to start is with a collection. It gives you something to hunt for each year. And then I’m only buying a couple ornaments and trinkets here and there each year. I always love Martha Stewart’s Living “Collection” column. Even the tiniest, simple items, when grouped together, can make an awesome display and statement.

My tree definitely has a mixture of ornaments, but for the most part, they are gold, white , silver and green and most of those are glass. And for the last 15 or so years, I’ve collected pine cone glass ornaments. I hang these on a little silver tinsel tree separate from all my other ornaments. I also collect vintage glass ball ornaments, in the same colors (gold, white, silver and green). These are just keep in a big bowl or tray. Sometimes I add a string of battery operated lights to the bowl as well. I buy just 3 or 4 a year at antique malls and flea markets. The more worn and old they look, the better and I love when they have a little hand painting or flocking on the outside. These I pay about $1-$3 for each (therefore I only add a few each year).

I hit the jack post this year with this brass all seasons wreath. I found it at an estate sale, actually the estate sale for the house my parent’s bought. It’s the perfect addition to our mantel mirror.

My santa mugs are a newer collection, and I actually added 4 new ones this year, including the green santa I shared on Instagram. He’s my favorite, of course. I think these mugs are the only Santa themed Christmas items I own. Most of these mugs are from the early 1950’s. I sit them out by my coffee machine, and whenever anyone is in need of some tea, coffee or hot cocoa, a Santa mug is a must. Nothing puts you in a more festive mood then sipping from Santa’s smiling face (that might have come out wrong).

Bottle brush trees are a fun item to collect. The ones pictured here are all vintage, but you can actually find new bottle brush trees everywhere now and in every color. The hunt for vintage ones can still be fun. I added the little gold colored tree to my collection this year.

Little candy dishes and plates are fun to collect. I found this pair of tree shaped dishes for less then $5 at an antique mall. I love when my Christmas decor is not all overly Christmas themed, then I can leave out a lot of these pieces throughout the winter season.

Here’s a few of my glass pinecone ornaments.

And definitely not everything that I own is old, but this vintage pick of mercury glass beads sure looks cute in the new little vase I bought from Dream Green DIY. These are fun to find. I think they are Japanese made, and were intended to be icicles for your tree. But, they can add a little sparkle to a vase and you don’t have to worry about them dying.

So, there you have it. A little look at our holiday decorations. Now, it might be too late for this year, but it’s never too early to plan for next year. And actually this is the best time of year to buy Christmas decor, because it’s all on sale! Even antique malls and thrift stores will put their holiday decor on sale after Christmas. They don’t want to store it all year, so start hunting, and make them an offer, I’m sure they will be willing to give you a discount.

DIY Terrazzo Coasters

December 11, 2018

I have partnered with the Martha Stewart team and Plaid Crafts for this post. Thank you for supporting the companies that help make this blog possible.

You know life is too busy when it’s been months since you’ve had time to tackle a DIY. This week, I really didn’t think I had time to squeeze in one more thing and then I sat down and started painting and I was so grateful I was in the middle of a DIY. I’m sure a lot of you can relate, there is something so therapeutic about making. It calms and relaxes me. I definitely will be allowing a lot more time this month to bake and make with and for my family.

Holiday Party season is here, and I know we have a few that we are attending in the next week of so. Therefore, I’m on the hunt for some good host/hostess gifts and this year I think a few friends will be getting a set of these DIY Terrazzo Coasters.

I’ve been itching to try something terrazzo inspired. When I was in Sweden last year, there were so many fun terrazzo accessories for the home. And since my house is not built for terrazzo floors, these little coaster will have to do. So, a trip to Michaels and a little shopping in the Martha isle, and I came home with all the supplies I needed.

Here’s what you will need:

Start by making sure the surface of the tile is clean. A little glass cleaner will do the trick. Then cut the stencil to a 4×4 inch square, remove the backing and adhere the stencil to the tile.

Begin by painting the darker colors first. I tried a few different methods and found that this gave me the best terrazzo-like affect. I chose a few stronger colors and painted them first and then filled in the remaining shapes with a pale cream color.

Often when I use stencils, I like to use a stencil pouncer, but with this being so highly detailed, a small fine-tipped paint brush worked so much better.

Once I had filled in the green, brown, pink and gold, I painted the remaining spaces with the lighter color.

Then, while the paint is still wet, remove the stencil and rinse it immediately under warm water. These stencils can be used a couple of times. Just place the clean stencil back on the paper backing it came with.

Once the paint is completely dry, I cut a square of felt, just slightly smaller then the tile and adhered it to the back of the tile with a little hot glue.

I decided 4 was a nice sized set to receive, so I stacked them and tied them with a little velvet ribbon.

They are far from perfect, but I kind of love the little imperfections of something handmade. But, if you like a more polished look, you could definitely go back and fill in some of the shapes that maybe didn’t get as much paint as the others.

You can find Martha Stewart products exclusively at Michaels.

Now, what’s the best hostess gift you’ve given or received? Was is something homemade?

Minted Mural in Nursery

December 3, 2018

This post is sponsored by Minted. Thank you for supporting the companies that help make this blog possible.

Minted Wall Mural in Naturally Neutral Nursery

I think a lot of you can relate to this if you live in a new build. Often the smaller bedrooms are really just simple square rooms without much for architectural details or interesting moldings. Sometimes these spaces just need a big BANG of color, pattern and texture. I can’t wait to tell you guys about Minted’s new Wall Murals. But, you can see for yourself, these murals are absolutely  STUNNING!

This room definitely went from blank to beautiful!

Gender Neutral Nursery Before

I’ve long been a fan of Minted products and when I heard about the launch of this latest product, I knew I had to get my hands on it. Minted curates designs from a global community of independent artists and designers. So, you always feel like you are getting a one of a kind piece for your home. The model homes I have been working on are almost ready, so I decided the nursery needed a punch of color and this Tomah Wall Mural by Lorent and Leif is one of the prettiest things I’ve ever seen. And I’m actually really kind of sad this isn’t in my home.

Minted Wall Mural in Naturally Neutral NurseryMinted Wall Mural in Naturally Neutral Nursery

This home has a pretty traditional vibe, and I wanted the nursery to be gender neutral and have lots of nature elements to it. It turns out, I just had to pick some pretty neutrals, a couple vintage brass pieces, a few black + white patterns and the wall mural did the rest of the job for me. Walking into this room really changes your mood, it definitely transports you to a lush green landscape. And instead of just having one window, it’s like the whole room is a picture window now.

Naturally Neutral Nursery

The mural was so much easier to put up then I thought. It came in 5 long panels and I had visions of messing up one of them or putting it on crooked. But, really it went up like a breeze and the material was so easy to work with. It laid super flat, was easy to readjust if I needed to reposition it a bit and the seams came together beautifully. I do recommend having a friend to help, you could definitely hang it by yourself, but a second set of hands is really helpful when you are going up a down a ladder. Minted’s site also provided awesome step by step instructions, but I’ll list a couple things we figure out along the way.

Tips + Tricks

  • My assistant Bree helped my put this mural up, her motto is, “When in doubt, squeegee it out!”. And a simple shower squeegee was a handy tool to have, you could work from the center of the panel out and get any bubbles or folds out very easily with a little squeegee action.
  • For the first panel, you can’t trust the the corner of the wall is a totally straight line. So, we measured an inch shy of the width of the panel and used a level to draw a straight line down the wall. They we had a true straight line to follow and if the corner wasn’t completely straight, we had an inch that could be cut away at the end. After that first panel was in place, we just followed it as a guide for the rest.
  • Before we removed the backing at the top of each panel, we first used a little painters tape and taped it in place where the pattern matched up the length of the panel. Then we would peel back about 6 inches of the backing from the top and adhere it in place. The the weight of the panel wasn’t pulling on the top, and we knew that it would line up perfectly even when we got to the bottom.
  • We had a few inches to spare on the both the length and width of our panels. So we didn’t started right at the very first edge of the mural, we gave ourselves 2 inches of play. This way if the ceiling line wasn’t totally straight, we would end up with a gap on one end. They we just trimmed away that excess at the end.

One thing I haven’t mentioned yet is that this wallpaper is completely removable. So, if you are a renter or just afraid of permanent installations, this can be taken down in minutes with no damage to the walls at all.

Minted Wall Mural in Naturally Neutral NurseryTomah Minted Wall Mural

And even once all the panels were up, it was so simple to trim the excess. The lines in the corners, baseboards and ceiling all came out really straight with just a simple x-acto blade cut.

Gender Neutral Green Nursery

I kept the rest of the room pretty quiet with a couple of black and white prints. A simple alphabet chart and an adorable llama was all the room needed. The dresser I bought at a second hand store for $30 and my dad gave it a fresh coat of paint for me. Originally I thought I would put gold hardware on it, but the black pulls just looked so sharp and played nicely with the pretty Jenny Lind black bed.

Gender Neutral Nature Inspired Nursery

I also feel like this is a mural that a child can grow up with. Even though this is a nursery now, it’s not a necessarily a baby-ish scene. I could easily see this being a very cool teenager’s space. Gosh, I want this mural behind my bed.

So, the question is, what do you think? Would you put a mural in your home? Is there a room that is just begging for a bold statement wall? You should definitely go check out Minted’s selection of murals, there is literally a color, pattern, and style for any space.

Naturally Neutral Nursery

December 2, 2018

How about a little sneak peek of what is to come tomorrow morning. I miss this blog. I’ve been so busy with projects and client work here in town that poor O+P hasn’t seen any love in a while. But, finally one of those local projects is getting a little closer to completion and I can start sharing the finished product with you. Remember the Tarina Homes Inc. model homes at Shamrock Hills I’ve been talking about for over a year? Well……. I have one room ready for you to see, and it’s a pretty darn cute one.

The nursery is almost DONE! The full reveal is coming soon, but I thought I’d share the mood board with you first. Just to give you a little taste of what’s to come. And don’t fret, all the sources will be linked as well.

But, without a doubt, the Minted Wall Mural is the star of the space. Those rolling green hills and puffy clouds are going to be the backdrop for the crib. What baby wouldn’t want to live here.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy what is left of your weekend.

Our Guest House is even more Guest Ready!

November 15, 2018

This post is sponsored by Peet’s Coffee, thank you for supporting the companies that help make this blog possible.

Peet's Espresso Capsules so that guests feel even more at home.

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know that we renovated a little Guest House attached to our garage just over a year ago. It has really been such a great addition to our home. It’s a perfect little spot for our friends and family to stay when they are in town, and when it’s available, we also host it on airbnb. It’s just so much nicer for our guests to have a space for themselves.

Peet's Espresso Capsules

We’ve recently done a couple of updates in the Guest House to make it a little more comfortable. We had a big dresser in there, but just found that guests didn’t need all that storage, so we replaced it with a little loveseat and I think it’s a great addition. Before we just had one chair, so if there was two guests, someone had to sit on the bed. And as it’s getting cooler, I’m making sure there is lot’s extra blankets, fluffy robes and even softy socks so that everyone feels right at home.

Peet's Espresso

When guests spend the night in our little Guest House, we try to make it as much as a home away from home as possible, and that’s why we provide a simple breakfast and good coffee. In my books, a good cup of coffee is vital for having a good day. We keep it pretty simple with a pastry, some fruit or maybe yogurt and a hard boiled egg. Recently we added a Nespresso machine and stocked it with Peet’s Coffee Espresso Capsules. There’s nothing better then waking up to a yummy shot of espresso.

I’ve long been a fan of Peet’s Coffee, whenever I’m in San Fran, it’s a MUST! But, now it’s easier than ever to have their dark, rich, and intense espresso flavor at home. And they are so easy to purchase – Peet’s Coffee Espresso Capsules are available at Amazon.com, Target, Vons, and Peets.com. They are conveniently compatible with Nespresso Original machines. And the capsules are made of aluminum.

My personal favorite is the Ristretto blend. It has a beautiful rich crema.

Napoleon Dynamite Halloween Costumes

November 1, 2018

Napoleon Dynamite Costumes

Well, another Halloween has come and gone. And we definitely had a great time. This is Denali’s last Halloween with us, because she is a senior is high school. In the last 17 years, I’ve made a lot of costumes. I’ve been that crazy mom that has dressed my kids in costumes that go together. But, gosh it’s been fun. And I know I will be so happy that I have all of these memories and photographs for years and years to come. Sorry to get sentimental, but sometimes you just gotta be a sappy mom.

This year we decided to dress up as some of favorite characters from Napoleon Dynamite, one of our all time faves movies. And, I think it’s obvious that we had some fun.

Napoleon Dynamite Costumes

Olivia played the role of Tine, aka “The Fat Lard”. I followed Mer Mag Blog’s Llama turtorial to make this adorable llama. I decided to take it a step further and cover her completely in fuzzy fleece. Olivia is totally in love with this llama, she’s not ready for Halloween to be over anytime soon.

Denali’s Deb costume was the by far the easiest. Just some scrunchies, a pair of thrifted mom jeans, a pink polo from amazon and running with your hands by your side is all that is needed.

Dylan’s Napoleon costume is kind of a thrifting dream come true. I found this amazing cord 3 piece suit at Salvation army for just $12. It fits him so well. I also picked up a wig and some nerdy glasses at the party store.

Pomegranate Potion Mocktail

October 30, 2018

Halloween Pomegranate Potion Mocktail

It felt like was time to for a new Mocktail recipe. Our pomegranate trees are loaded right now and I’ve been looking for fun ways to use this yummy fruit. Halloween is just about here, and I’m having a little fun making spooky treats. Any drink that has ginger beer as the main ingredient is a win in my books and with the sweetness of pomegranate it’s perfect for the sweet tooth that Halloween brings.

Pomegranate Potion Mocktail

Pomegranate Potion Mocktail

  • Pomegranate Cordial (see recipe below)
  • Ginger Beer
  • Ice
  • Fresh Blackberries + Pomegranate for garnish
  • Cocktail picks and plastic teeth

In the bottom on a glass muddle, 3-4 blackberries. Add ice and fill the glass almost to the top with ginger beer. Add 1-2 oz. of the Pomegranate Cordial. Top with a sprinkling of pomegranate seeds and plastic teeth. You can also drizzle I little more of the cordial on top of teeth for a creepier look.

Pomegranate Cordial

  • 3-4 pomegranates
  • sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • pinch of salt

Remove all the seeds from the pomegranates. Place the seeds in a blender and blend on high. Strain the pomegranate through a strainer lined with cheese cloth to remove all the seeds and pulp. You may want to poor it through the strainer more then once. Measure the amount of juice (you should get about 3 cups). Add the vanilla and salt. You will use a 2:1 ratio for the juice to sugar. So, if you have 3 cups of pomegranate juice, add 1 1/2 cups of sugar.

Bring the mixture to a boil and keep at a rolling boil for 3 mins. Cool completely and store in an airtight jar in the fridge up to 2 weeks.

Plum, Parmesan and Pepita Salad with Maple Balsamic Vinaigrette

October 23, 2018

Fall weather immediately makes us think that soups and stews are the only thing we can eat. But, I’m actually a huge fan of salads. And while most of the Summer produce is gone, here in California our farmer’s market’s are still packed with fresh veggies and fruit. This salad has that winning combination – it has yummy leafy greens, fruit, cheese and nuts. I picked up the sweetest plums and some pretty arugula at my farmer’s market and with a little bite from some parmesan and a crunch from some pumpkin seeds you just can’t go wrong.

Plum, Parmesan and Pepita Salad with Maple Balsamic Dressing

I served this salad to my church bible study group and everyone loved it. One of the guests even confessed that she never eats salad and that this was delicious! This might be one of my favorite salad dressing recipes of all time. If given the choice between a vinaigrette or ranch, vinaigrettes always win for me. I really love making salad dressings, they are quick and easy and then you know exactly what you are eating. This maple vinaigrette is just the right amount of sweet and tangy and feels like they perfect dressing to take me through the colder months.

Plum, Parmesan and Pepita Salad with Maple Balsamic Dressing

Plum, Parmesan, and Pepita Salad

  • a large bag of arugula (about 6 cups)
  • 2-3 ripe plums
  • parmesan shavings
  • 1/4 cup roasted and salted pepitas
  • Maple Balsamic Dressing (see recipe below)

Wash and dry the arugula well. Place in a large bowl. Top with slices of the plum cut into 1/4″ thick wedges. Sprinkle with the pepitas and using a vegetable peeler, shave off thin slices of the parmesan. Just before serving, drizzle a generous amount of the Maple Balsamic Dressing all over the salad.

Plum, Parmesan and Pepita Salad with Maple Balsamic Dressing

Maple Balsamic Dressing

  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tbsp. dijon or grainy mustard
  • salt and pepper

Place all the ingredients in a glass jar, seal with a lid and shake vigorously for 30 secs. The dressing should be quick thick. Taste and add more salt or pepper if needed.

It’s such a pretty salad as well. What is your favorite Fall inspired salad? Would you agree that any salad that has fruit + nuts + cheese is the way to go? Salads shouldn’t just be veggies, there’s so much opportunity to experiment and play.

DIY Modern Brass Mobile

October 10, 2018

I’m in Downtown LA today for a really fun reason. Tonight I’m hosting a DIY Workshop with Hunker. If you’ve been around here for a while, you know that I contribute to Hunker’s site. One of my recent DIY’s, this Brass Mobile, is the project we will be making tonight at The Unique Space.

These pretty hanging pieces are definitely on trend right now. But, if you’ve ever shopped around for a brass mobile, they are not cheap. And understandably, brass is not an inexpensive material to work with. But, I’ve found a little bit of a cheat and this easy-to-make mobile can be made with materials ordered from amazon. You can head over to the full post for all the details, instructions and links to supplies.

I’m a little crazy for mobiles these days. I have this one in my girl’s room, one over my kitchen window and one in a corner of my guesthouse. Mobile are not just for babies, I’m just sayin.
