Thrifting Thursday – Napa Valley Finds

May 1, 2014

If you follow my instagram, you know that we spent Spring Break in Napa Valley camping with Riley.    I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to do a little thrifting while I was there.  In the little town of Cloverdale, CA,  I hit the jack pot.

I found a lot of great nick nacky accessories and a fabulous lamp at the local Goodwill.

I found a lamp base and a separate glass fixture and put them together to make a funky lamp.
The art deco-ish glass sconce fit perfectly onto the lamp.
And then I went across the street to The Ice House and found this amazing topographical map of Alaska for just $10.
What have you found thrifting lately?  I’d love to hear about your treasures.

DIY Book Plates with the Makr App

April 30, 2014

All my creative and organized friends, or friends who want to be creative and organized, you are going to love the Makr app for the Ipad.  You can design and print custom business cards, labels, tags, invites and so much more.  I had so much fun playing with this App.

The first thing I chose to make was something for our book loving family.  I’m kind of sentimental about gifts and want my kids to remember who, where and when they got their books.  I also love to give books to my nieces and nephews for special occasions.  So, instead of writing on the inside covers,  I’ve designed some fun labels using the Makr app.

The possibilities are endless with trendy patterns, images, shapes, colors and text.  You can start with one of the many pre-made designs and customize it for your specific needs or you can start from scratch and create something uniquely yours.
I’ve got a special deal for Oleander and Palm readers –  you can enjoy a free Makr credit AND 20% off a print order! Just register with the referral code GOOLEANDER and enter same code at checkout.

And for all that will ask, the books and pottery are all thrifted.  I spent a total of $5 on all those items.  This is why I love thrifting soooo much.  And the flower is from my garden.  This is my favorite poppy color.  It’s getting warm though and I think the poppies are almost done, sniff sniff.

I’m partnering with Makr to bring you this post.

Pop of Color – Pale Pink

April 28, 2014

It’s Spring and something about this time of year makes us want to add a little life and color to our homes.  Let’s get out of the Winter greys and a little POP of color.  I’m so excited to share a fabulous giveaway with you.  How does $100 to Wayfair.com sound?  Pretty great, I’m sure.

Maybe this should be considered more of a fizzle then a pop of color, but I am LOVING pale pink.  It’s such a soft, pretty color that goes so well with so many other colors.

My kitchen is mostly white, with all the cabinets, but my avocado green glass tile backspace makes the statement in the space.  For a while now I’ve wanted to add another color to the space, but just was unsure of where to go.  I didn’t want to be safe with a teal or even yellow, but I think this pale pink in splashes throughout the space is perfect.  It’s a little unexpected and totally stands out in a very saturated green space.

I found all these amazing Ferm Living (my fave) pieces at Wayfair.com.  Man oh man, they have EVERYTHING!  It’s such a great way to find accent pieces in a specific color and style.  Wayfair has amazing search options to make the shopping experience a piece of cake.

Here’s how you can enter to win a $100 gift card.  Simply leave a comment with the color you’d like to POP in your home this Spring and what item from Wayfair you would buy to bring that color into your home.  That’s pretty easy, right?

This giveaway will end on Thursday, May 1st at 12 noon PST.  You may enter more then once.

Can you see why I LOVE Wayfair?  Such a great site for those hard to find fun pieces.

Best day ever!  I am so lucky to get to share this geometric himmeli heart tutorial on my favorite blog – Vintage Revivals.  You guys, if you don’t know Mandi, you are missing out.  She is so incredibly creative, resourceful and thrifty.  Everything she makes is one of a kind and unique.  Every time she puts a room together, I’m blown away.  She recently revealed her niece Macie’s new Boho bedroom, and one of these fun geometric hearts sits on the cute shelves.  I hope you head over there today to check out the full tutorial.

White Grape Ginger Mocktail

April 16, 2014

“This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #TENways  http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV

Oh my, Napa Valley is treating us really well.  The weather is perfect and we are enjoying long bike rides through the vineyard back roads.  I’m trying to use this Spring Break to help me get in shape.  When you are surrounded by beautiful scenery, going for a run or a bike ride is totally a treat.  And to cool off afterwards, we’re enjoying guilt free refreshment with the TEN line of sodas (7-UP TEN, A&W TEN, Sunkist TEN and Canada Dry TEN).
Inspired by our surroundings, I’ve come up with a refreshing mocktail.  This White Grape Ginger Mocktail is crisp and just slightly sweet.  It really tastes like your enjoying an indulgent treat.  But, when made with Canada Dry TEN, it’s full on flavor with only 10 calories.
White Grape Ginger Mocktail
Canada Dry TEN
white grape juice
frozen green grapes
fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced thin
ice
In a glass, drop a few frozen grapes. and then fill the glass with ice.  Fill the glass 1/3 full of white grape juice and then top off with Canada Dry TEN.  Skewer the ginger through a tooth pick and sit it in the drink.

When you’ve finished this thirst quenching drink, a little surprise waits for you at the bottom.  Frozen grapes make a great cool sweet treat.

Head to Walmart to find all these great TEN products.  And right now you can save with this coupon (offer available while supplies last 3/24-4/17).  For more about these great ten calorie products, check them out on facebook and twitter.

Coral and Kelly Green Home Office Inspiration

April 15, 2014

I’m really excited to share my next big project with you.  I get a do a total room makeover of a home office.  My client is giving me total creative freedom in the space (let’s hope she doesn’t regret this).  She wants a clean, modern, and organized space.  I’m hoping that this fun coral and kelly green color combo is going to bring energy to the space.  There will be a lot of white in the room, so I think the pops of color will really stand out.  I’m adding a lot of graphic black and whites as well to create contrast and pattern.

So, here’s where I’m heading with the room.  I’m hunting in all my favorite thrift stores and searching Craiglist for unique pieces that I can give a little DIY love to.  I’m hoping for a great mix of old and new.

We’re currently camping in Napa Valley this week, it’s our Spring Break.  I’m dealing with some very spotty Wifi.  If you’d like to know more about the sources for these items, just let me know.  I’d be happy to share.  And a lot of the inspiration sources can be found on this pinterest board.

Friday’s Fabulous Five – Carrots

April 11, 2014

Who knew carrots could be so dang cute?  Friday’s Fabulous Five this week features the Easter Bunny’s favorite treat.  Maybe I love those because I am a carrot top myself, but I think these are some really great ideas.

I’ve got a few more carrot ideas to come.  I hope you have a great weekend.  Since this week’s posts didn’t all get up on time, I’ll be posting some this weekend.  See you soon.

Carrot Patch Cake

April 7, 2014

What a great weekend.  We headed to LA on Saturday for the Oh Joy for The Land of Nod launch party (which was a blast) and then on to San Diego to spend the rest of the weekend with my brother and his family.

Easter will be here in no time.  This cake is a must every Spring for our family.  This is my mother in laws amazing carrot cake recipe.  It’s super moist and packed with yummy stuff like coconut, pineapple and pecans.  It can simply be baked in a 9X13″ pan, it makes great cupcakes, or make a tall 3 layered version like this one.  I wanted to do something fun to decorate this cake, so I decided to use my carrot sugar cookies to make a little carrot patch.

Carrot Cake
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 1/4 cups vegetable oil

2 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. vanilla
2 cups grated carrot
1 can crushed pineapple (drained)
2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
1 cup chopped pecans

Mix together well the first 3 ingredients.  Then add the remaining ingredients and mix for about 1 minute.  Prepare baking pans by coating with oil.  Bake in a 350F oven for about an hour for a 9×13, a little less for 8″ rounds and about 25 mins for cupcakes.  Cake is done if inserted toothpick comes out clean and cake bounces back to touch.

Cream Cheese Frosting
1 8oz. package of cream cheese
1 cup butter (room temp.)
1 bag of icing sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
a little milk (if necessary)

Beat cheese and butter together until smooth.  Add the icing sugar and beat until smooth and creamy.  If the frosting is too stiff add 1 tsp. of milk at a time.

To make the “green grass”, place 1 cup of shredded coconut in a large ziploc bag.  Add a couple drops of green food coloring and shake the bag until all the coconut to colored green.

I piped my carrot sugar cookies with colored buttercream.  I simply inserted a knife into the cake where I wanted the carrot cookies and then pushed the cookies in part way.

And I know you’ll ask, the cake stand is from Minted.  And yes, it’s gorgeous!!!!

Friday’s Fabulous Five – Easter Eggs

April 5, 2014

It’s Friday!!!! This has been a really long week for me personally.  I’ve had some tough junk going on in my personal life.  It’s all I could do to get up and shower each day and try to take care of my family.  I’m sure you can relate, sometimes life just knocks you down. It’s sucked me completely dry of any creative energy. Today I’m feeling hopeful though and ready to carry on.  I’ve had a few big losses lately, but I also have some really great things to look forward to.  So, here’s to the future – it’s looking bright and full of promise.
And now, how about some gorgeous Easter Egg projects to inspire?  Be sure to head over to these lovely ladies’ blogs and share a little comment love with them.  Have a great weekend friends.
