The Brand New Oleander + Palm

March 24, 2016

Welcome to the brand new Oleander + Palm.  This has been a long time coming.  This is a BIG, Big deal everyone – I’m no longer on Blogger.  I’m so excited!  Can you tell?  So many explanation marks!!! A new site and a new look. I feel like I went from a beat up Honda Civic to a shiny new Tesla.

blog redesgin 5Here’s a look at the old site. It served me well for almost 5 years, but it was so one dimensional.blog revealThere are lot of really great things about the new Oleander + Palm. Here’s what I’m excited about:

#1.  One of my favorite new features is the pretty galleries for my categories.  You can check them out on the top bar and in the righthand side bar. There are pages for FOOD + DRINK, TRAVEL, DIY, and DESIGN. Thumbnail pictures on these pages link to the full post. Now if you are looking for something specific, it’s going to be so much easier to find.

#2.  A newsletter is coming very soon. So sign up with your email address now!!!

#3.  I finally have a fresh clean header and logo.  It’s been long overdo and this new look feels so much more like me.

#4.  I love the instagram preview at the bottom of the blog.  It’s a great place to show off my latest IGs.

IG

#5.  How about that cool new rotating marquee at the top of the blog?  This makes me feel fancy! If you haven’t visited the blog in a while, it’s a great way to see what the latest posts are at a glance.

#6.  I’M NOT ON BLOGGER ANYMORE!!!!! You guys, I’m pretty sure folks are going to take me a little more seriously now. This isn’t a hobby blog, it’s my full-time J-O-B. But, in all honesty, WordPress is going to make my life so much easier. There are so many plugins I’m excited to use. First on the list is a recipe card, wouldn’t it be nice to print out a recipe and put it in an actual recipe box?

This took a group effort to make this move happen. I’ve got some very special folks to thanks. I’m so grateful to have friends with techy smarts and talent. First off, Amanda of the beautiful blog, Handmade Mood, was the mastermind behind all of this. She is backend blog expert and did an amazing job of moving all 800 of my posts over from the old site. If you are stuck on Blogger still, she is the lady to employ.

Next I need to thank Molly of both Almost Makes Perfect and Blogzilla Studio. Molly and her partner customized the already beautiful Velvet Blog Theme to be exactly what I was looking for.

And lastly, but far from least, thank you to my generous friend and talented designer MJ of Pars Caeli for helping me refresh and design a new logo and look for my blog.  Be sure to check out her awesome new store, Good in Store.

So, what do you think???

Last Minute Heart Shaped Gifts

February 10, 2016

‘Tis the season for all things hearts. So if you are looking for something to get you in the spirit or just a fun gift for all the ‘gal’entines in your life, look no further. I’ve rounded up the best heart covered gifts out there. Whether you really want to splurge or just spend a couple bucks, I’ve got you covered.
I need to tell my husband that I’d never be angry with a gift from Fossil, just in case he’s looking to buy me something (wink, wink).  Just look how cute that little grey coin purse is? And since Olivia has outgrown all of her Sven Clogs, I think I better consider these cute gold and silver slip on ones. The heart and scollop detail is adorable.

Throw a Last Minute Super Bowl Party

February 6, 2016

Ok, I’ve been busy thinking all about Valentine’s Day and almost over looked the Super Bowl THIS weekend! Oh, my husband wouldn’t have missed it, but I do love a good excuse for a party. And the Super Bowl is all about the snacks, all the ones you avoid all year long. So, even if you haven’t planned a party yet, there’s still time to. I’m going to share with you my last minute party plan. This is going to be easy and stress-free.

Here’s my tips and tricks for throwing a last minute Super Bowl Bash:
1. Crunchy Munchies. Chips, pretzels, crackers, popcorn – they all need to be there. And the best part of serving these is there is no cooking required.
2. Messy Meats. I’m talking wings, and little hot dogs, corndogs, meat balls, all those saucey, messy meats are game day favorites. You don’t have to make a whole bunch of food from scratch, check out the freezer section at your grocery store. Most of these can be simply warmed up in the oven or a crockpot.
3. Dips and Dunks. Make sure you have all the classics like salsas and dips. Everyone loves to dip and dunk their food.
4. Bottled Drinks. Who wants to worry about cups and ice. Stick to bottled drinks and then you can just have them all in the fridge, chilled and ready to go.
5. Real Plates and Real Napkins. Forget the paper plate situation. Yes, you’ll have to run the dishwasher at the end of the evening.  But, when folks are eating off their laps and coffee tables, real plates ensure less spills and messes on you carpet and furniture. And I’m a believer in the cloth napkin. It’s way more absorbent then flimsy paper napkins.
6. Half Time Entertainment. As a mom, I know there comes a point when you want all the kids out of the house. Send everyone outside to throw a football or run laps around the house. A little fresh air will do everyone some good.
7. Crafts and Coloring. Not everyone is going to be glued to the game, especially little guys. designate an area for coloring or a simple craft to keep little hands busy and occupied.
8. Easy Clean Up. Leave the clean up to PERSIL PROCLEAN 2in1 Power Liquid. Those cloth napkins and grass stained knees from running around outside can be cleaned up with this amazing laundry detergent. It really works you guys, it gets out all the stains, the first time! Consumer Reports rates it the top new detergent.
You’ve got this friends!!! Be confident and throw a great Super Bowl Bash!

5 Changes I’m Making for 2016

January 20, 2016

This post is sponsored by Pique Tea, thank you for supporting the companies that help make this blog possible.
I really didn’t make any New Year’s resolutions this year, but I am making a few changes.  I’ve decided that this is my year to take care of myself. Just typing that makes me feel uncomfortable. But, I’m giving myself permission to take care of me. If you are a mom, you can probably relate. For too many years I’ve neglected my body and well being. I know I am tired and frustrated and I don’t want to feel that way. So, I’m making 5 changes that are hopefully going to make me a better mom, wife, and just human in general.
1. I’m exercising regularly. I’ve always exercised, most of my adult life.  But, this last year, I felt too busy or guilty to take an hour a day to do this for myself.  Years ago I battled with anxiety and panic attacks.  One of the tools that helped me get through that time was running. My body needs to move in order for my mind to rest. And while I still feel guilty taking this time for myself, I know I already see results.  I’m sleeping better and feel more energized throughout the day.
2. I’m eating clean. Or maybe I should say “cleaner”. I’m trying to really be picky about what I eat. I’m looking at food more as fuel then a magic pill to take away my stress (no more handfuls of chocolate chips from the freezer because I’m feeling overwhelmed). I love to bake and cook meals for my family, that isn’t going to change. But, I’m not always going to eat the sweets and treats, and that’s ok.  My 38 year body just can’t handle sugar the way the rest of my family can, and that’s ok.
3. I’m giving myself permission to do nothing. I’m trying to do this everyday for at least 30 mins. This doesn’t come easy for me. I always feel like there is something that needs to be done. Some email that needs to be answered, dishes that need to be washed, or some big post that I should be editing pictures for. I’d love to say that my work day ends at 5:00 PM, but I’m just not ready or able to do that yet. But, I am giving myself permission to close the laptop, ignore the messes in my house and just sit and flip through a magazine, play on pinterest (just for fun, not for the blog), watch an episode of my favorite show on Netflix, or just sit by a window and drink a cup of tea. When the afternoon lull hits and I’m wanting to push through, I’m making myself a cup of Pique Tea and taking the time to sip it while it’s still hot.  I’m telling myself that it is ok to do NOTHING. This is hard for me, I’m a doer and goer.  Slowing down is not a strength for me. But, my body and mind are tired, so I think this is something I need to do everyday.
I’ve also taken the month of January to really NOT blog much at all. You may have noticed. I’m a little burnt out and just need some time to catch up before I dive full force into blogging this year.  I appreciate my faithful readers who are hanging in there with me while I take this time. I’ll be back with regular posts very soon, and hopefully I’ll be energized and inspired after a little break.
Pique Tea requires no messy tea bags, it’s handcrafted from organic whole leaf leaves into crystalized tea. Simply open a sachet and stir it into hot water for the perfect cup anytime, anywhere.  It comes in Earl Grey (my favorite), English Breakfast, Jasmine, Sencha, and Mint Sencha.

4. I’m taking time to be creative. This is not me making something for the blog, this is me just being creative to be creative. I need to have the freedom to make without the pressure of creating a post or DIY. Making is definitely a way I refuel my mind and it does energize me, and if I have the pressure of making something pinterest worthy, some of the fun in creating is taken away. So, I’m playing with watercolors and sewing a little here and there, and you all might never see it.
5. I’m clearing clutter and getting rid of “stuff”. If you know me in real life, I don’t really have a cluttered house or a lot of stuff. But, I really want even less “things” in my life. I know that my mind can’t rest in a messy space. It’s just how I’m wired. When my home is clean and organized, life just seems better. So, this is not a new idea to me, I clean all the time (ask my family). But, this year I’m making an effort to get rid of more things I don’t use or need in my life.  Since the new year, I’ve loaded our car twice with bags of clothes, books and everything else I don’t need and I’ve donated it. It’s weird, dropping off those loads really does feel like a weight is lifted. And with less stuff, my house always feels cleaner and easier to organize. Even my older kids mentioned this weekend that they liked getting rid of stuff as we cleaned the garage together.  They recognize that all the “stuff” really isn’t necessary.
You can sign up for a free week trial (week supply) of Pique Tea.  This trial includes 5 flavors of tea (14 sachets total – a $9.69 value). Head over to Pique Tea to sign up.
