So, I better start packing.  There are a lot of things on this Tropical Travel Essentials list that we will be taking. But, I also came across some really awesome DIY travel accessories that would be great for any trip.

Pale Pink Chair

May 21, 2015

There were quite a few things I learned from my reader survey that surprised me.  One things you wanted more of was a look behind-the-scenes and more of the studio.  So, here’s a little look at Olivia’s space in the studio.

This year, Olivia goes to pre-school 1 to 2 days a week. She’s a really social kid and loves being with friends so I’m glad she can go now and then. But, when she’s not at school, she’s my side kick. She loves going to the studio. I have a little table and chair for her and she has a whole drawer full of paper, markers, scissors, glue, paint, and tape. She can spend hours making stuff. Don’t get me wrong, she also makes a lot of messes in the process. But, I’m thankful she’s happy to be “working” with me. Yesterday she even lined up her crafts on the floor and asked for the phone so that she could take some pictures. Maybe she needs her on IG account, it could be entertaining.

I have two of these little chairs, I bought them at a thrift store when Denali was a baby.  They were sage green with little red seat cushions the first time I gave them a makeover.  Then when Denali was about 4 or 5, I painted them bright pink (seen here).  And now they are the perfect pale shade of pink. And the best part is that the name of this Sherwin Williams color is OLEANDER!!! Seriously, it was meant to be.
When Olivia isn’t in the studio with me, or a have a big shoot, I can easily move her little station to a corner.  I added a little temporary color to the wall above the table with a couple sheets of Minted‘s gorgeous wrapping paper in blue and pink. I love this color combo. Blue is not usually a color I play with, but it’s a new color I’m trying to add to my mix (remember my Colbalt Blue mood board).

Oh, and because I know you’ll ask, the wall color is from Sherwin Williams as well and the color is Snowbound. It’s are really pretty bright white and I used the Emerald line of paint, it covered really well with one coat.

3 Aussie Shops That Will Inspire You

May 18, 2015

I’ve been following three Australian shops on Instagram for a while now.  They make me want to fly half way around the world just to shop.  And although they don’t all ship to the US, I love to followthese shops on instagram and visit their online shops for inspiration.  So, I thought you should know about them as well.
The first one is Gorman. Their textile patterns are jam packed with color and modern shapes.
The next shop in Jumbled.  If you need some color inspiration in your life, this is the shop to follow on instagram.
And the third shop is Aura Home.  It’s muted pallet and clean white spaces will have you craving bright, simple room.

What companies and shops do you follow?  Are any of them filling your instagram feed with color and pattern inspiration that I should know about?

The Eye Motif Trend

May 16, 2015

I love a trend. It’s a chance to stay current and and it keeps me feeling hip and young. At 37 years old, I need all the help I can get. This is a trend that has be showing up for the last year or so. This eye motif is playful and graphic, especially in black and white.  Here’s a few fun ways to try out this trend.

I’m not saying you have to try every trend that’s out there. But, it’s fun to experiment with the ones that speak to you.

I hope you have a productive and creativity-filled weekend.  Take a risk, play with a trend or try something new.

5 Tips to Make Camping Easy

April 30, 2015

We love an excuse to camp.  It’s the best thing for our family.  We get away from all the TV, phones and computers and actually have time to connect with each other.  And nothing is better for the soul then being outdoors and enjoying nature.  It refuels and inspires me.  There’s no cheaper vacation then to sleep in a tent for a few days.

We love to backpack, tent camp and we even have a little vintage trailer.  Now if you aren’t a regular camper, I know camping can seem like a ton of work and effort to just be cold, dirty and hungry. So, I’m going to give you a few tips to help make camping a breeze.  These are really tips for making the weekend trip simple and totally doable.  So, this Friday, load up the car and head to your favorite spot.

1.  Pack Ahead of Time

We keep all our sleeping bags in a duffle and all our thermarests (sleeping pads) in another duffle. They are in our garage, ready to go.  It’s just a matter of throwing them in the back of the truck with a tent, and we are about ready to go.  It’s a good idea to invest in good sleeping bags.  We don’t have the cheapest sleeping bags, but we’ve also used them for 12+ years.  Once we throw our duffles, tent and kitchen in a bin in the truck, all that’s left to pack is our clothes and the cooler with food.

2.  Kitchen in a Bin

I keep all of our camping kitchen supplies in one plastic bin.  It has all our dishes, pots, stove, foil, wash basin, towels, table cloth, Dreft Wipes, marshmallow sticks, etc.  Everything except the food is in this bin and ready to go.  Once again, we can just grab it from the garage and there’s no thinking through what we might need.  It’s all there ready to go.

I love these Dreft Gentle Clean Multi-Surface Wipes, they are perfect for wiping down picnic tables and cooking surfaces in your camp.  They are gentle cleaning wipes, perfect for surfaces that kiddos are going to touch.  Who wants to take harsh chemicals out into the great outdoors?

3. Keep the Food Simple

I love food that can be made ahead.  It makes my job so much easier when we are camping.  Then I’m not stuck over the camp stove or fire for hours preparing food.  We love these Campfire Breakfast Bagels.  They are packed with protein and even some veggies to start our day right.  We also have our go-to meals that we stick to.  If I don’t have time in the week to make food ahead of time, we stick to the basics like instant oatmeal for breakfast, PB & J for lunch and hot dogs over the campfire for dinner. It’s not fancy, but it’s totally easy fuel for the body.  Keeping the food simple for a weekend of camping gives me time to enjoy my kids and go on more hikes.

Campfire Breakfast Bagels
12 eggs
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
salt and pepper
1 cup fresh spinach
12 cup cooked and crumbled bacon
12 slices of cheese
12 mini bagels
non-stick cooking spray
In a large bowl, beat the eggs until all of the yolks are broken.  Season with salt and pepper.  Spray a muffin tin generously with non-stick cooking spray.  In the bottom of each muffin cup place about 5-6 spinach leaves and divide the cheese and bacon evenly among the cups.  Ladle the egg mixture into the 12 cups, filling each one to the top.  Bake in a 350 F oven for about 20 mins or until the a knife inserted comes out clean.  Remove the from the muffin tins and allow to cool completely.  Place in a large freezer bag and store in the freezer.

Store the cooked eggs in the cooler.  When you are ready to eat them, make sure your fire has good coals.  On a piece of foil make a bagel sandwich with the sliced cheese and baked egg.  Wrap well with foil and place near the coals in the fire or on the grate above the fire.  Rotate often.  Cook over the fire until the cheese is melted and the eggs are hot throughout (about 15 mins).

4.  Skip the Shower

No, really it’s ok to not shower for a whole weekend.  We do a lot of dry camping (like there is no water at the campsites) and for two days, this is totally doable.  When you don’t have to pack for showering, there is no need to bring towels, shampoo and even hair styling products.  It simplifies your packing and makes that first shower back at home so much sweeter.  We do takes baby wipes for quick armpit shower before bed and I love Boogie Wipes for little faces.  They gently remove all the layers of dirt and campfire sot from a day of playing outside and collecting rocks and sticks.

5. Less is more.

We probably camp more then the average family.  And when we do camp with friends, we always have way less gear then everyone else.  We do have a truck, but often we fit our family of 5 and all our stuff in our tiny Toyota Matrix.  The less you take, the less you’ll have to clean up and put away when you get home.  So, ask yourself, “Do you really need those camp chairs and the badminton set?”  Kids will happily sit on a rock or tree stump and nature provides plenty of toys.  Stick to the basics and concentrate on absorbing all that there is to see and do outside.

Now, get out there and go camping. We are headed to the Sequoias this weekend.  You can follow our adventures on my Instagram.  And for more camping recipes, here’s some of our favorites.

Butterfly Brunch

April 29, 2015

I love hosting parties and get-togethers.  Kids parties are the best, because I can run with a theme. But, sometimes I’m just not in the mood to have my home spotless for guests or deal with the cleanup after.  And to be honest, our house is really small, so if you have more then 5 kiddos over, it feels very crowded.  So, I decided a picnic party in the park was a great solution.  I put together a fun little Butterfly Brunch for Olivia.  Her friends met at the park and I brought the brunch and games to them.

To make sure the all important nap time is not missed, a morning party is perfect for little ones.  I started with Munchkin’s adorable Butterfly Lunch Bags and made simple decorations and treats in the butterfly theme.

No paper plates and cups needed for this party.  All the guests were served their brunch in Bento Boxes and Drink Box Carriers that I added butterfly touches to.

In each Lunch Bag I packed a french toast breakfast shaped as a butterfly, a little yogurt, fruit, and some syrup for dipping.  I cut french toast diagonally to make 4 triangles and then placed them on either side of a breakfast sausage to make the wings of the butterfly.  I also added a couple slices of strawberry for antenna. Olivia loves the little containers and compartments for keeping her food neat and organized.

No need for fancy drinks, kids LOVE anything in a pouch or box.  I gave these super handy Drink Box Carriers a little party look by adding paper butterflies.

And after you run around and play for a while, you need a snack, so I made these easy butterfly cracker and cheese bags.  I painted some small wooden clothes pins lavender.  Then, I filled a snack sized zipper bag with a handful of oyster crackers and a few cubes of cheese and divided the two treats with the clothes pin.  The crackers don’t get mushy and it makes a fun butterfly shaped snack.
And here’s my favorite part, there is NO cleanup.  As a party favor, send the lunch bags, bento boxes and drink box carriers home with each guest.  It’s a favor your guests will actually use.

Come back tomorrow to see the how-to’s for the cute Butterfly T-shirts I made for Olivia and her little friends, a take-anywhere game I made with a towel and Munchkin’s Grippy Dots, and the cute paper butterflies on the Drink Box Carriers.

DIY Tropical Leaf Tablecloth

April 23, 2015

I’m ready for warm weather.  Well, I better be, because it’s definitely here in California.  I’m loving all things tropical and green these days.  It takes me back to my childhood, growing up on a South Pacific island, Papua New Guinea.  There, everything was thick green jungle and it rained every night.
I made this fun DIY Tropical Leaf Tablecloth to bring some of those island vibes to my next party. Be sure to head over to Curbly to see the full how-to.

And how cute is my big pineapple bowl I recently thrifted and my Grandma’s sweet little yellow and gold salt and pepper shakers with this tablecloth?

April 1, 2015

Well, this color should be no surprise to my faithful followers. Grey is my FAVORITE neutral. There isn’t a color that looks bad with grey. And contrary to what folks say about grey, it doesn’t feel cold or masculine. It’s clean and modern and works so well with any style.
Here’s a few fun finds to add a little grey to your life. I guarantee, a couple of these sleek pieces would definitely work in your home.

Be sure to check out my Gold and Cobalt Blue mood boards as well.
